Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

CSE2111 Electronics for Digital Systems [Elec. DS]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit will replace the present DGS2120 Digital Systems 1 as a core unit in the Bachelor of Digital Systems, and will run annually in Semester 1.Most digital systems that interact with the real world get information from analogue sensors and many provide outputs to analogue actuators. Overall system performance can be seriously degraded by poor design or ignorance of limitations in the analogue domain. Students should understand techniques of analogue signal processing and limitations of real devices for interfacing to digital systems. They also need practical experience in prototyping circuits, not only to validate design work and reinforce theory, but also as a skill for further learning.

Version History

27 May 2002 John Hurst change examination from 2 hours to 3 hours at Nandita Bhattacharjee's instructions
28 May 2002 Nandita Bhattacharjee Since we have proposed a new course for Bachelor of Digital systems since 2002, I wish to incorporate minor changes to the handbook entry for the subject, cse2111, Electronics for Digital Systems. 1) Delete the following lines, which appears in the synopsis of the 2002 handbook entry for cse2111: "Introduction to modulation/demodulation techniques in communication systems. Introduction to proportional, integral and derivative control systems." 2) Amend the 2 hours examination to 3 hours. Item (1) is to provide sufficient time to cover the electronics in adequate depth and the course includes CSE2318, Data communications and networks and CSE3133, Fundamentals of Robotics where these omitted introductory topics would definitely be covered. Item (2) is to provide sufficient writing time in the exams for all students.
