Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

The World Wide Web is a phenomenon, which has entered the computing arena in recent years. The Web has opened up new challenges for computing professionals, with an increasing number of computer applications needing to be developed for a Web environment. A solid knowledge of the basics of web page development is, increasingly, required of computing professionals.Some students at master's level do not have a systematic understanding of the principles of good web page development. It has been found that some students taking cpe5011 Internet Applications Development, do not have a sufficient grasp of this area. These students need to be diverted into a 9000 level unit to master the skills and understanding of the priciples, before proceeding with the more advanced material.

    Brief introduction to the physical structure of the Internet. W3C and its role. Document markup: HTML and XHTML. Hypertext. Web site structure and navigation. Elements of web pages: text, graphics, media. Design with and implementation of: lists, tables, frames, layers, cascading style sheets. Web graphics: vector and bitmap images, image constraints, digitising images, basic graphic design. Plug-ins. Multimedia: audio and video capture and streaming. Incorporatiing streamed multimedia into web pages. Scripted multimedia using SMIL with text, images, audio and video media.. Embedding multimedia. Planning bandwith. Web page design principles. Elements of visual design. Form design and implementation. Brief introduction to the use of scripts. Site development life cycle. Legal and ethical considerations. XML: structure of XML documents, validating XML documents, Web design using XML. Introduction to Wireless.WAP 2.0 and XHTML-MP. WAP CSS / WCSS.WCSS properties. WCSS Extensions.

    This unit is conducted through the Walkabout u-Learning Environment.

    Students self manage their learning with the help of the Walkabout environment. On campus drop in help sessions, and evening on line help sessions using the Marratech system are available for students to obtain timely assistance.

    The Walkabout u-Learning Environment provides content notes, pre-recorded lectures, exercises and quizzes.

    Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (23 Nov 2006, 1:09pm)

    The on line environment will be used to address the required level of knowledge and theoretical concepts for all the knowledge objectives. Provided exercises will pursue those objectives with practical experiences to develop the Skills objectives. Practical assignments will focus on the design and implementation of web sites to futher develop these skills.

    The students will be required to adhere strictly to copyright requirements in their work to engender a professional attitude towards copyright. The practical work of designing and implementing web sites will engender a professional pride in one's work.

    Assessment

    Strategies of Assessment (23 Nov 2006, 1:09pm)

    The assessment has three components: Unit exercises: 10%; Practical Assignments: 40%; Final Examination: 50%. Students must gain a satisfactory result in both the practical and exercises work and the exam to gain a pass in the unit.

    The practical work will require the development of a personal and a commercial web site. The unit exercises consist of some exercises throughout the semester, to encourage student participation in the unit

    Assessment Relationship to Objectives (23 Nov 2006, 1:09pm)

    Practical assignments, which involve the building of web sites, will be employed to assess the practical knowledge objectives. The practical assignments will also help students develop skills required in successfully implementing the various features of a well designed web site. The final examination, will assess the students' degree of understanding of the knowledge objectives and require them to demonstrate their XHTML skills. The examination will also assess the students' technical knowledge of good web design, graphics and multimedia scripting.

    Students, are expected to spend an average of 12 hours per week on this unit. The breakdown of time is as follows. Two hours per week: topic material coverage from the u-learning environment. Two hours per week working on exercises and quizzes. Eight hours per week: private study to review topic materials, explore supplementary unit resources and complete practical work and assignments.
