CPE5012 Web Database Technologies [WebDB ]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

There has been an exponential growth in the Master of Network Computing degree and a high increase in enrollments in the unit offerings of the degree (e.g. CPE 5002 Network Security - 200 students, CPE 4001 Distributed Programming Java - 80 students, CPE5009 Internet Devices and Services - 90 students, CPE5010 Mobile Software Agents - 65 students). This proposal is being developed in conjunction with CPE 5011 Internet Application Development to strengthen the degree and meet this demand for units in the area of network and Internet technologies and applications. This subject will be offered as part of the Master of Network Computing degree offered by the School of Network Computing to meet the demands for graduates with expertise in developing web database systems and applications. The emerging paradigm of e-services is leading to a new focus for web-based database transactions. Web database systems are evolving from traditional web-interfaced applications to relational databases to facilitating inter-organisational exchange of data in a combination of formats - documents, semi-structured text (e.g. XML) and relational data. There is increasing research and commercial interest on the interface and access technologies and the data management issues of integrity, reliability, security and optimisation in web database transactions. The principal motivations for introducing this subject are the growing relevance of web database transactions and the distinct technological and theoretical concepts involved in the design and development of web database systems and applications. This subject proposal has been discussed with the CSSE Database Special Interest Group (meeting held on 13 August, 2002) in the context of rationalisation of the postgraduate database units offered on the Caulfield Campus. As part of this rationalisation, it was agreed to introduce CSE5250 Multimedia Retrieval Technologies along with this proposal, change the content focus of CSE 5220 Advanced Topics in Database Systems to data and database administration and delete the following units: CSE4310 Information Resource Management and Data Administrationthat, CSE 4430 Database Design and Administration, CSE 4700 Formal Methods in Database Systems and CSE4704 Formal Methods in Information and Image Retrieval.
