This unit is a clone of of the unit CPE3003 Topics in Advanced Web Page Design and Development. This level 2 version is required in the revised version of the Bachelor of Network Computing. Strategies of Teaching (11 May 2005, 08:32am)

The unit will have a 2 hour lecture and a 2 hour tutorial in computer laboratories per week for one semester.

The lecture stream will present the concepts inherent in sound large scale web page development, scripting, XML and mobile device applications.

The tutorial sessions will enhance the students' understanding of the principles by providing a series of graded exercises in the use of various tools such as HTML, WML and XML editors, mobile simulators, graphics development packages , to develop the skills required to development sound web sites.

OCL and flexible mode students will have access to the Walkabout Learning Environment providing content notes, pre-recorded lectures, exercises and quizzes. On-line live audio help sessions are also employed. On campus help sessions will also be offered to flexible students, where appropriate.

Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (11 May 2005, 08:32am)

Lectures will be used to address the required level of knowledge and theoretical concepts for all the knowledge objectives. Tutorials will pursue those objectives with practical exercises to develop the Skills objectives. Practical assignments will focus on the design and implementation of large web sites to futher develop the skills in navigational paradigmns, scripting and implementing XML in a web environment, thus further developing their skills in these areas. The students will be required to adhere strictly to copyright requirements in their work to engender a professional attitude towards copyright. The practical work of designing and implementing web sites will engender a professional pride in one's work.

OCL and flexible mode students will use pre-recorded lectures, and develop their practical skills using the exercises. Solutions are provided. OCL and flexible mode students will also undertake the practical work.

Assessment

Strategies of Assessment (03 May 2005, 1:16pm)

The assessment has three components: Unit participation: 5%;Practical Work: 35%; Final Examination: 60%. Students must gain a satisfactory result in both the practical work and the exam to gain a pass in the unit.

The practical work will require the development of an XML generated site, a mobile phone site, and a site featuring server side database access. The unit participation consists of some small exercises throughout the semester, to encourage student participation in the unit

Assessment Relationship to Objectives (11 May 2005, 08:32am)

The practical assignments will be employed to assess the practical knowledge objectives. The practical assignments will also help students develop skills required in successfully implementing the various navigational paradigms of a large web site. The assignments will also require students to demonstrate their scripting skills and their mastery of processing XML documents in a web environment. The final 3 hour examination,will assess the students' degree of understanding of the knowledge objectives and require them to demonstrate their scripting, WML and WMLScript, and XML skills.

OCL and flexible mode students will undergo the same assessment as on campus students.

Workloads

Workload Requirement (11 May 2005, 08:35am)

Students, are expected to spend an average of 12 hours per week on this unit. The breakdown of time is as follows. Two hours per week: topic material coverage (lecture attendance either on campus or on line lecture). Two hours per week: tutorial session (either on campus or on line help session and or on campus help session). Eight hours per week: private study to review topic materials, explore supplementary unit resources and complete practical work and assignments.

Lecturer 2 hours per week. Tutors: 2 hours per week per tutorial, or on line help session for OCL students.
