The World Wide Web is a phenomenon, which has entered the computing arena in recent years. The Web has opened up new challenges for computing professionals, with an increasing number of computer applications needing to be developed for a Web environment. Students of this degree, then, need opportunities to develop the specialist knowlege and skills required to plan and implement web sites. Students need to have a sound grasp of the fundamentals of Web design and implementation methods as a basis for building more advanced web based applications
On-campus, OCL, flexible
The unit will have a 2 hour lecture and a two hour tutorial in computer laboratories per week for one semester. The lecture stream will present the concepts inherent in web page design: both technical and visual aspects. The tutorial sessions will enhance the students' understanding of these principles by providing a series of graded exercises in the use of various web tools, such as editors, graphics packages, media conversion tools, to develop the skills required to develop sound web sites.
OCL and flexible mode students will have access to the Walkabout Learning Environment providing content notes, pre-recorded lectures, exercises and quizzes. On-line live audio help sessions are also employed. On campus help sessions will also be offered to flexible students.
Lectures will be used to address the required level of knowledge and theoretical concepts for all the knowledge objectives. Tutorials will pursue those objectives with practical exercises to develop the Skills objectives. Practical assignments will focus on the design and implementation of web sites to futher develop the skills' objectives. The students will be required to adhere strictly to copyright requirements in their work to engender a professional attitude towards copyright. The practical work of designing and implementing web sites will develop a professional pride in one's work.
OCL and flexible mode students will use pre-recorded lectures, and develop their practical skills using the exercises. Solutions are provided. OCL and flexible students will also undertake the practical work.
The assessment has three components: Unit participation: 5%;Practical Work: 35%; Final Examination: 60%. Students must gain a satisfactory result in both the practical work and the exam to gain a pass in the unit.
The practical work will require the development of a personal and a commercial web site. The unit participation consists of some small exercises throughout the semester, to encourage student participation in the unit
Practical assignments, which involve the building of web sites, will be employed to assess the practical knowledge objectives. The practical assignments will also help students develop skills required in successfully implementing the various features of a well designed web site. The final 3 hour examination, will assess the students' degree of understanding of the knowledge objectives and require them to demonstrate their XHTML skills. The examination will also assess the students' technical knowledge of good web design, graphics and multimedia
OCL and flexible mode students will undergo the same assessment as on campus students.

Two hours per week: topic material coverage (lecture attendance either on campus or on line lecture). Two hours per week: tutorial session (either on campus or on line help session and or on campus help session).
