This unit educates students in sound, scientifically based principles of designing and re-designing business processes. This is directly relevant to organisations making radical changes in their business processes in order to achieve best practice.

Reasons for Change (16 Jul 2007, 2:41pm)

Remove prohibition: IMS5005 (no longer appropriate after minor changes to unit content)

Amend contact hours: extend labs to 2 hours

Change of semester of offering from semester 1 to semester 2. This is for staffing reasons.

Amendment to prohibitions (add MBA5040).Added prerequisite of BUS9520 Business Systems A or equivalent.

Objectives

Statement of Objectives (15 May 2007, 5:21pm)

Upon completion of this unit students should have acquired:

  • An understanding of business organizations, their functional structure and the advantage of considering the process oriented view of organizations.
  • A thorough knowledge of business processes, their structure and how proceses fit in to the overall organization objectives.
  • Knowledge of the analytical tools that can be used to model, analyze, understand, and design business processes.
  • Skills to use simulation software as a tool for analyzing business processes.

    With increased globalization, companies are facing stiffer competition and successful companies cannot afford to harbour inefficiencies if they are to be competitive. Furthermore, customers are becoming more demanding. Business processes must be designed to ensure that they are effective and meet customer requirements. A well-designed process will improve efficiency and deliver greater productivity. This unit will survey the analytical tools that can be used to model, analyse, understand and design business processes. Students will also gain hands-on experience in using simulation software as a tool for analyzing business processes.

    4 contact hours per week (one x 2-hour lecture and one x 2-hour laboratory per week) plus about 8 hours of private study per week.

    Hi-tech lecture theatre with hi-resolution projector connected to a computer and facilities to connect the lecturer's lap-top computer for 2 hours per week.

    Laboratory Requirements (12 Jul 2006, 11:44am)

    Laboratories equipped with high specification IBM PCs, Windows NT or Windows 2000, and Extend 6 for one hour per week. Students should also be able to access additional resource material on the unit web site.
