Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

Amendment to prohibitions (add CPE5501, CPE5502, GCO5001, GCO5002, GCO5809).This unit is to be renamed from Special Topics in Business Systems to Business Systems Project 3. Prerequisites of BUS9520 Business Systems A and "Completion of at least 24 points of graduate level units" added and corequisites BUS9000, BUS5580 and BUS5590 added. Prohibitions CSE5701, CSE5702, BUS4580, BUS4590 added. This is an existing unit currently known as BUS5500 Special Topics in Business Systems. It was introduced as part of a module of 4 units within the Master of Business Systems by Projects. Students could choose to do between 1 and 4 of these project units. The aim of the each unit was to facilitate the student who wished to specialise in a business systems area such as commercial, financial and health systems. Business Systems Project 3 allows a student to have the opportunity to carry out a thorough investigation in the area of information and business systems. The investigation is done under supervision and provides a chance for the student to examine an area either not previously covered in other subjects, or to build upon their knowledge of topics in those subjects which are offered. In these circumstances, the drive for the project topic will come from the student. That is, the central aim of the subject is to encourage student innovation, research and experimentation. The student is supported in the definition of a topic, an appropriate research approach and hisher progress is monitored. Frequently the project involves links with industry (see Subject Summary) so this unit supports both innovation and industry engagement as enunciated in The Monash Plan.Only students with a Distinction average are accepted into a project unit, so the other aim of the unit is provide a filter for those students who discover they enjoy and are capable of further research. In summary, this unit encourages the student to use hisher own initiative and to produce innovative work rather than simply accept recognised results and follow standard paths. As such it adheres to the major themes of innovation and engagement which the Monash Plan promotes.
