For the last decade, organizational restructuring, the impact of the computer, the elimination of layers of managers and professional specialists, deregulation and global competition have brought about rapid changes in the way organizations are managed. Many of these changes have contributed to the rise of project management. There has been a rapid growth in the use of project management as a mean by which organizations gain their competitive advantages and achieve objectives. Many managers are now required to take on a dual role as a project manager to handle the growing number of in-house projects. This subject is designed to help students (managers-to-be) to develop a philosophy of project management as well as an understanding of the role that project management plays in contemporary organizations. The philosophy of project management that this subject aims developing, has three key attributes: knowledge, skill and attitudes. There is a vast amount of literatures on project management techniques, theory, skills, processes and methodologies. This subject will help students to build their knowledge on project management theory and practice, to learn the skill in applying these knowledge to project management processes and methodologies, and to develop a set of attitudes- values and aspirations - that facilitates effective professional project management.Despite the fact that project management is a new profession (started just after the Wars), a lot of the tools, techniques and methodology that are published do not work well for contemporary projects such as software application development projects. This is because these tools and techniques were often developed based on construction and engineering projects. This unit overcomes these problems.
